Amazing Andalucian Attractions

I thought for sure that Granada's Alhambra was going to be very hard to match in terms of historical meaningfulness and sheer splendor. Although yo pienso que la Alhambra es la mejor, here are cuatro cosas in Seville and Cordoba that tried to scratch the surface of la Alhambra's place in my heart.

Cathedral De Sevilla:
Not only is this the 3rd largest church in the world, but it is also the place where Christopher Columbus' remains are buried which I think is super cool. A cool fact I found was that even though St. Peter's Basilica and the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida are bigger than the Cathedral of Santa Maria (Sevilla), because of the fact that the two aforementioned churches are not the seats of bishops they are not "cathedrals" and therefore not considered for largest cathedrals in the world. This was a sight to see to say the least. And walking up the 35 ramps to the top was a workout well worth the trouble as the vista of Sevilla from the top of the Giralda was magnificent.

Alcazar of Seville:
The Alcazar of Seville is basically the rival to the Alhambra in Granada. The palaces are very similar in style, but there are a lot of differences between the two nonetheless. Something the Alcazar has on the Alhambra is it is the oldest royal palace still in use. The reason is because the palace in Seville (at least the upper levels) are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence, as Granada has no equivalent. Needless to say this was a great experience to see one of the most visited sites in the world.

Maria Luisa Park:
The first spectacular I noticed while inside of Maria Luisa Park was the Plaza De España. It was literally a half circle full of buildings that looked like they were built during the Renaissance Era. Not only that, lining them were individual tiles dedicated to the cities of Spain. I would have felt morally remiss if I did not take a picture next to the dedicated tiles for Granada, so here is a photo with Halie:

Mezquita of Cordoba:
This was the most interesting attraction to me because of the sheer uniqueness of the building. I can't believe that they built a cathedral inside of a mosque, and more so that no one knows why it happened. It seemed pretty important that this is the unique place where a cathedral was built inside of a different religion's sanctuary. Nonetheless, I was in awe of the architecture from the beginning and learning more about the history made the tour come alive. One of the funnier parts of the tour was in which the Catholics tried to mimic the Moorish arches and they ended up degrading at a much faster pace, leaving behind arches that look withered away to say the least. But the building was spectacular and one of the most interesting I have witnessed in person.

  1. I'm glad you went to the top of the cathedral in Sevilla. The views are the best of the city.
